I did a 'Google' on 143 Ashted Row where I used to live as a child,
All these addresses came up,
Strange to think a little boy was born 70 years before we moved in, I loved that old house of ours, 2 massive cellars, meat hooks hanging from the ceiling, two big reception rooms, large Kitchen, a brew house, outside toilet, still no hot water though..

The data has been extracted from The COLESHILL CHRONICLE, The KENILWORTH ADVERTISER,
The BIRMINGHAM DAILY MAIL, The BIRMINGHAM DAILY GAZETTE, The KNOWLE JOURNAL
and The SOLIHULL ADVERTISER.

Hmm..I wonder what became of them? to think we shared the same home 70 years later, is there anywhere that could tell when 143 Ashted Row was built? I've often wondered.
Thanks for the info..

A Thomas Horton lived there in 1912 and, from 1920 to 1950, a Clara Perkins was there.

Les, Few facts and figures for ya
The Gazette Nov. 3rd 1829
The rapid manner in which this town has extended on all sides within the last few years ..
A populous district is now forming between Ashted and Aston Road

It was said in 1780’s an entire street, with houses could be built in two months (I wonder how long the street was?)
St Mathews Church Great Lister Street built in 1839 was called St Mathews in the Wilderness because of the lack of people and homes in the area …at this time houses were being built in Lupin St
House building was growing fast by 1831 in Ashted but all houses were privately owned so you had a landlord and a rent man And there were never enough good houses built for the amount of rent that the poor could pay ……..and it was not till 1890 that the city council got involved with municipal homes and 40 years later started the first slum clearances
The Duddeston and Nechells Development plan passed by the City Council in 1943 (I suppose the Blitz helped) and 6 years later the Government approved of the plan and the clearance began

Hi Kandor, It's a small world. On the 29th. Nov 1886 my Grandfather William Henry Harrison had his Elementary Education Certificate filled in on the back of his birth certificate  he was 9 years old then. The address given was 141 Ashted Row next door?

It is nice to hear that the houses are still standing would you mind describing No. 141 to me. I now live in Norfolk so it's not so easy for me to come and look. Williams Mom and Dad were living there with 3 daughters and 3 sons Wiliam being the eldest son another son came along in 1893. They had moved by 1908 to Aston Lane.

I find it quite special to know who was in your house before you. Not many people take the trouble to find out. If only the house could talk - now there's  a thought with modern technology.!!

Cheers for now.
Tony
