Long ago and far away,
In a land that time forgot,
Before the days of Dylan
Or the dawn of Camelot...
There lived a race of innocents,
And they, were you and me,
Living in another time
In the Land of Memory

We'd never heard of Microwaves,
Or telephones in cars,
And babies were breast, or bottle fed,
And never grown in jars.
Pumping iron got our wrinkles out,
And 'gay' meant fancy free,
Hospital wards were single sex
In the Land of Memory

We'd never known of Rock bands
That were Grateful to be Dead,
And planes were not called Jefferson,
And Zeppelins weren't Led.
And Beatles lived in gardens then,
And Monkees in a tree,
And Madonna was a virgin
In the Land of Memory

There were no 'Safety Cameras'
No Perriers to chill,
And fish were not called Wanda,
And cats were not called Bill.
And middle aged was thirty five
And old was sixty three,
And ancient were our parents
In the Land of Memory

We had our share of heroes,
We never thought they'd go,
Least not like Buddy Holly
Or Marilyn Monroe.
For youth was still eternal,
And our lives were yet to be,
And Elvis was forever,
In the Land of Memory

We had our TV favourites,
Eric Morcambe seemed so nice
And when Cinema made movies,
They never made it twice.
We didn't have a Star Trek Five,
Or Psycho Two and Three,
Or Rocky/Rambo Twenty one,
In the Land of Memory

Oh, there was truth and there was goodness
In that land where we were born,
Where navels were for oranges,
And Peyton Place was porn.
Harold Wilson was in power
And Hoss was on TV,
And God was in his heaven
In the Land of Memory

So now we face a brave new world
In slightly larger jeans,
And wonder why they're using
Smaller print in magazines.
And we tell our children's children
of the way it used to be,
Long ago and far away
In the Land of Memory...

Hello Kandor
Brilliant post and so much truth in it. I am sure many of us wish we could turn the clock back a bit.

Incredible writing Kandor, touches the right notes.

I'm not sure where I'd like to go back to. Mid 70's were a great time for me and have lots of memories of that time. When I hear particular tunes, takes me strength back, to the places and the people of that time.

On the other hand, I would not change yesterday to today.

Evening
Many, many things were good in our earlier lifetime but things have gone downhill.
I woudl like to see an end to.
Murders
Drugs
Child Abuse
Overcrowding in all Cities.
Stupid Politicians
Leave the EU today
Save people from destruction with HS2
What can you add.
Gerald.

In addition I would like to see an end to:
Bigotry
State dependency
Lack of empathy
Loss of green field sites
Cruelty and bullying
I don't know what you call this phenomena but an end to photo taking when someone is in distress, i.e. terrorist attack, road accident, when folks are at their most vulnerable.

An interesting thread but, pause for a moment and look at the subjects listed. So many of them have been around for centuries, in one form or another and it isn't that simple to change human nature.

Haven't got one myself but I think mobile phones are the scourge of today, my G children come never say a word ,all you see them do is tap with there thumbs and take pictures of themselves. But I think I am in the minority.

I believe the past is the past, I don't let it hold me back I just keep moving forward. I know I'm  on the right path because I'm uninterested in the past. I try to live by this "Nothing lasts forever, so live it up, drink it down, laugh it off, avoid the dramas, take chances and never ever have regrets because at one time  everything you did was exactly what you wanted to do". We all have free will folks!
