I did a few thousand miles in a Reliant three wheeler on my motor bike licence before I took my test
driving a Triumph in Shrewsbury.
Not much of a test, as soon as we started off a lorry shot across the road and I managed to avoid a collision.
We were both shaken up and he said we were lucky to be alive. When we did start off again he chatted to me
for the rest of the test, asked me one simple question about the highway code and that was the end of the test.
He said the way you avoided a serious collision showed me that you could drive.
Hope that never happened to any of you good people.

Drove through a set of traffic lights at five ways on red whilst taking my test, next time same examiner and he talked me through my test, what a great bloke.  Passed my test in 1963 after lessons with Hanger Motor company school of motoring, main thing I remember was the instructor chain smoking, bit off putting as I've never smoked.  Learnt in a 105e Anglia, sloping back window.

My dads Ford Corsair, with him teaching me to drive.  Well, let's say it was fraught at times. Dad then decided to change the car for a Capri 6 weeks before my test. No way I could reverse that round a corner. So I booked a driving instructor with a ford Escort, had a lesson a week before my test.

The test was at 3PM on a Friday around Yardley, the traffic was mad, bloke overtakes me on the crossing as I was pulling away. I thought, that's it, failed!

What good news, I passed!

I passed my test first time after 6 lessons, The lessons were at Select school of motoring in a ford escort at the Pelham. My test was at Sheldon. What I haven't told you, I was driving for a few years before and my car was a Mk 2 Cortina.

Hello Gerald, I had my licence in 1973, but been riding motorbikes before that. I had my original green licence until a few months ago. Was quite attached to it, the couple of endorsements I had back in the 70's were written by hand in pen. Why I don't have my old licence any longer. Back near the end of last year I changed my insurance provider, they wanted proof of my years driving and other info, they needed a copy of my photo licence. I didn't have one, so sent old licence off. Got photo licence, then the insurance company told me the paper one would have done. So hacked off, no longer got my original licence......
