When I was 16 I used to go up to the Roller skating rink on the Dudley Rd,
I went there three or four times a week until I was 18, then my two mates got involved with women (whom they both married....twits) leaving sad old 'Nobby no mates' left on my own..
No worries, I really did enjoy going there though, in fact they are some of the happiest memories of my life..
Doing it so often also meant I got pretty good at it too...forwards, backwards, sideways, upside down, hovering (ok, I made the last three up) but, I did end up a pretty good skater..that ended when I was 18.

Jump forward 21 years and I'm back at the Roller rink with my daughters..they wont remember but the look on their faces when their old dad went back on the rink and skated round without falling over once, sure, I was rusty, but I could still do everything then I could all those years before..

Now fast forward another 19 years and today I'm back there with my grandaughter Katie and her friend Bethany..
It's like I'd never been away..sidewards, backwards, forwards, upside down, inside out, holding hands..
Ahh the boys' still got it..
And that's exactly how I felt, the years just dropped away and I was young again..
What a truly beautiful day.
And here we are, me and Katie, Derby Roller rink, a few weeks ago.

Les, they are great memories, I dont have any like that, after leaving Brum, I left my old memories there and replaced them with new ones, where my little ones speak another language, and they asking their mom why does papa speaks funny,( English accent)  I show them photos of where I used to live, I look up and see the snow on the mountains and the high peaks, of which my little ones see as normal, they see the dirty little hovels where I lived, the old trams, and very high busés, they dont belive me, they go to school on a school  bus, or their mother takes them in the car, but, when Sunday morning comes I take my little ones into the village, and we sit out side the cafe, drinking coffee, they drink lemonade out of wine glasses, telling every one its a white wine, I sit back and remember what I did on Sunday back in Brum, could'nt wait for twelve oclock to come so I could pop down to the pub, back home after lunch, we would go for a walk in the forest, I would show them tracks left by the animals that live in the forest, fox, badger, deer, and come across the tracks from a tractor, asking them which way was it going, yes, old memories for new, .. but I still remember....J2

Les, so you are the one who knocked me off the end of the train..rotton s*d

Ended up in Hospital with a broken wrist and ankle,
Thank you tho for the memories....

The Orange grove in High St. West Bromwich also had a skating ring but
very much smaller than Dudley Road.
Doubt if the street is there now let alone the rink..........

Les you brought memories back for me. Would that have been Springhill Roller Rink - if so I used to frequent there.

Also Silver Blades Ice Rink in town.  That is where Les first asked me out.

J2

You say you don't have any memories like that after leaving Brum, you left them there and replaced them with new ones. Not so -  memories are memories.  Doesn't matter what sort they are, what they relate to -  you will never forget them they are embedded in your brain and your heart.

You said you sit back and remember what you did on Sunday back in Brum, couldn't wait for twelve oclock to come so you could pop down to the pub.

No John,  you haven't left your old memories here in Brum - they are still with you.

fay, yes, you are right, they sit at the back of my mind moving in and out with the mists of time, I remember the good time, and I remember the bad times, which brought me a lot of pain, but thats life...j2

Baron you look to be  a really ladies man -

Yes the ice skating rink brings back memories – I had just come back from being evacuated – my friends all had white skates and I had to rent some ugly brown ones – LOL  When the music played  on came the dancers – I hung around to watch

Did learn to get around without falling down – but it was not my cup of tea
