As the census entries on this entry start to include New Street,Erdington I would think that Walsall Road would be the name for Sutton New Road.

In my 1862 Corporation Directory for Birmingham and its Environs it states Walsall Road...Newtown Road

Newtown Road may be the name of Newtown Row .....and Walsall Road maybe the forerunner of Birchfield Road or even the High Street.....don't forget we are talking about a time before most of the streets in that area were built......

Bill sent this message. and my thanks to G/J
My interests in the area is that my great-great-grandfather, William Smart, was born there in 1827. His son, Edward Smart, was also born there in 1850. Edward left in 1872 and immigrated to Quebec, Canada. He later moved to Chicago, Illinois.
I enjoyed learning about Birmingham and someday hope to visit the area. Thanks for your help. Bill Smart

My uncle, before he passed away in the 1980's was doing research
concerning his father's side.  He had hired DeBrett's Ancestry Firm.
I inherited this and have been working along his line, sporadically,
for the past ten years.    My great grandmother was Margaret Carey
(born 1839), Birmingham  and her younger sister was Ellen
(born1845).  I think these dates are accurate.  Ellen married Edward
Shilton and they had three surviving children.  One of them being
Caroline Shilton.   Caroline's father died and Ellen took the family
to Buenos Aires.  I have no idea as to the reason.  Margaret, took
her family to visit.  I know it had to be in the 1890's as I have
found Buenos Aires records as to the marriages of three of her
children.  My grandfather, Margaret's son, left Buenos Aires on a
cattle boat to return to England.  This whole time is  very spotty
and colored.  I am hoping that Mr. Wagstaff has information that
would fill in this time zone.  I have no idea what happened to
Caroline's mother.

I hope this is enough information.

I thank you very much for your response to my query.

With regards,

Barbara Tingle

Barbara
You are asking info regarding my Gt Gt Grandmother, Ellen Shilton (nee Carey)
Daughter of James Macaulgy Carey
As you say, Ellen married Edward Shilton on 3rd August 1868, & they had 3 children
Edward Hislop Shilton b.1869, William Shilton b.1875, & Caroline Ellen Shilton (my Gt Gm) b.1878
I know that Edward H Shilton went to Argentina & worked for the Railways.
Caroline also lived there & married Robert Roscoe in Buenos Aries on 25th October 1899
They had 2 children, Maud (my G/m) b.1900 & Robert b.1902
I was also told that William J Shilton moved to South America
Maybe that is why Ellen went there to be with her children
Caroline split with her husband and returned to the UK, & by the 1911 census, Ellen, Caroline, and Maud
were living in Aston, B'ham
Ellen died on 1st November 1932 in Handsworth
Hope this info is of some use

Hi
Re Alberta's post on 23 Oct 09  It does seem that William Brignell Reeves was living a double life --- with my great gran!!!
1901 census
William B Reeves 52 cloth cap maker born London City
Joan Reeves 42 wife born Wolverhampton
Percival Reeves 13 son born London Blackheath
Olive Leila Reeves 3 born Wolverhampton
Address 18 Union Street Wolverhampton

Joan or Jane was the widow of Sydney Barratt who was Percival's father Olive Leila (my Nan) we believe was William Reeves daughter on her birth certificate father William Barratt.  Jane gave birth to Percy while in Millbank Prison Huh  William Brignell Reeves died at Horsleyfields Wolverhampton

Joan or Jane Barratt moved to Leopold Street in Birmingham and my Aunt can remember that she had a milleners shop

I would be pleased if any one knows anymore about the family
